Time to start monetizing

Wow, it's been a really long time since I've last posted on my blog. I have no excuse outside of not really being interested, I've had more projects outside of this site than I know what to do with and frankly I just haven't been willing to invest the time to keep it current. I plan on changing that soon and relaunching jalpino.com with different content, perhaps mostly focused towards finance and the learning experience I've been going through in getting my net worth under check.

So, now for the real reason for this post. You all might remember that I run a website called mp3Salad which enables users to discover 'free' music on the web using the worlds most powerful search engine, Google. The site has steadily increased it's traffic since it's inception and I think I'm at a point where I need\want to start monetizing on the traffic that it receives. This past month, the pages views for mp3Salad exceeded 500,000 views!!!! Thats half a million page views in a single month. I never would have expected traffic to increase to those levels when I first started the site.

My goal over the next week or so is to first, get around an inherent pit fall of the site, the search query restriction in place by Google (limited to 1k search queries a day with their API) as well as adding more advertisements in prominent areas of the site. I'm torn between keeping the site lean and free of annoying ads, but the opportunity to capitalize on half a million page views a month is not an everyday occurrence. Until this point I have never placed focused on earning revenue with the site, but now I think that it's time.

If anyone out there that is reading this post has ideas on how I should best approach increasing advertising on my site, please leave me your feedback.

Wish me luck.

  • Update: I haven't done anything yet in terms of getting around the search query restriction. Just about every approach I could think to take would have violated their Terms of Service

  • Buddy of mine recommended Burstmedia.com, valueclickmedia.com - you still doing anything with the site?

  • casalemedia.com and adsdaq.com, too

  • Thanks for the links Tom, I haven't heard of them besides ValueClickMedia. Although I'm no longer "supporting" mp3salad, I can use these links for future reference.

  • that's a shame, man - end of an era. any new ideas?
